Authorities to Conduct Checks at Air, Land, and Sea Checkpoints

Singapore has tightened its law enforcement efforts against tourists entering the country with electronic vaporizers, also known as vapes. This move is part of a global crackdown on the use of e-cigarettes, as reported by Bloomberg.

The Singapore Ministry of Health has announced that authorities will conduct operations at air, land, and sea checkpoints, starting with Changi Airport. Incoming passengers will be checked for vapes or their components and fined if caught carrying them.

Strict Penalties for Vape Possession and Sale

The purchase and use of electronic vaporizers are already illegal in Singapore, with a maximum fine of S$2,000 (approximately Rp 23 million) for offenders. Those caught importing or selling vape products can face a fine of up to S$10,000 (around Rp 154 million) and a prison sentence of up to six months for the first offense.

Targeting Youth and Unknown Long-Term Effects

Although the long-term effects of vaping remain unknown, it can cause nausea, vomiting, mouth and respiratory tract irritation, chest pain, and heart palpitations. The primary target of these products is the youth.

Global Efforts to Combat Vaping

Singapore’s actions align with those of other countries like the United Kingdom and Australia, which are also working to address the issue of vaping among the younger generation. This increased enforcement in the city-state comes a week after Australia announced a ban on the import of disposable vapes starting from January 2023. Australia has also implemented a ban on the import of non-therapeutic vapes as of March 2023.

As countries worldwide continue to tackle the growing concern surrounding e-cigarette use, particularly among youth, Singapore’s strict enforcement measures at its borders demonstrate its commitment to protecting public health and discouraging the use of these potentially harmful products.
