Summerville Town Council Discusses Potential Vape and Smoke Ban in Public Areas
The Town Council of Summerville is meeting Thursday evening to discuss a proposed ordinance that would prohibit smoking and vaping in specific areas of the town. If passed, the ordinance would ban smoking and vaping in town-owned recreational facilities, parks, playgrounds, and public areas.
The Summerville Director of Parks and Recreation proposed the ordinance in response to staff requests to reduce vaping in public areas, particularly in parks and areas frequented by children. The ordinance aims to promote a clean and healthy environment for residents and visitors to enjoy the town’s beautiful parks.
Mayor Russ Touchberry expresses hope that the ordinance, if passed, will promote positive change in a clean environment. “From a public safety and public health initiative, we want to make sure that folks are not negatively impacted when they come to our parks from other people’s habits and create an environment where they can feel welcome and enjoy the beautiful parks,” Touchberry states.
The town council will discuss the issue and eagerly awaits the community’s views on the matter. Mayor Touchberry encourages residents and business owners to attend the meeting and share their thoughts, saying, “We certainly love hearing from our community members and business owners, so we welcome that.”
Thursday evening’s discussion marks the initial reading of the ordinance, and no decision will be made at this time. The ordinance will be up for discussion again at the town’s next council meeting, where further deliberations will take place.
