Taiwan Implements Strict Vaping Ban with Hefty Fines

Taiwan vaping ban fines regulations

Taiwan has officially enforced a vaping ban following amendments to the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act. The National Police Agency confirmed that individuals caught vaping can now face on-the-spot fines of up to TWD 10,000 (approximately $330). This move aims to curb the use of e-cigarettes and heated-tobacco products across the country.

Police officers can issue fines immediately or use photo and video evidence to send penalties to violators’ registered addresses. The fines for vaping match those for smoking in nonsmoking areas, ranging from TWD 2,000 to TWD 10,000. This strict enforcement aligns with penalties for other minor offenses like jaywalking.

The amendments also raise the legal age for purchasing cigarettes from 18 to 20. Furthermore, the sale of e-cigarettes and heated-tobacco products is now prohibited. Importers, manufacturers, and sellers violating these rules face fines of up to TWD 50 million.

Taiwan’s new vaping ban reflects a strong commitment to public health and stricter tobacco control. By imposing significant fines and raising the legal smoking age, the government aims to reduce the prevalence of vaping and smoking among its citizens.
