Türkiye Cigarette Prices Increase 2023: Smoking Concerns Rise
Türkiye has witnessed a series of cigarette price hikes in recent days, with the latest increase announced by Erol Dündar, President of the Tekel Dealers Mutual Aid Association (TBYD). The Imperial Tobacco cigarette group has joined the ranks of PM, BAT, JTI, and TT cigarette groups, which have already increased their prices by 4-5 TL in the first days of August.
Consumers Seek Answers as Prices Climb
As the news of the price increases spreads on social media platforms like X, consumers are searching for answers to questions such as “Did cigarette prices increase, how much are cigarette prices, and how much are the cheapest and most expensive cigarette prices?” Erol Dündar took to his social media account to announce the Imperial Tobacco price hike, stating, “Imperial Tobacco cigarettes have increased in price. The rain of increases on cigarette types continues.”

Türkiye Tops Global Smoking Charts
A recent European Union (EU) Statistics Office report has revealed that Türkiye ranks first in the world for the highest number of cigarettes smoked per capita per day, with an alarming 17.1 cigarettes. Greece follows closely behind with 15.7 cigarettes, while Israel and Japan both have a rate of 15.5 cigarettes per capita per day, and Austria stands at 15.4.
Tobacco Control Plan Highlights Pervasive Smoking Culture
The “Tobacco Control Plan 2018-2023” report underscores the pervasive smoking culture in Türkiye, revealing that at least one out of every four people aged 15 years and above is a regular smoker. This translates to nearly 20 million people in the country who smoke regularly, emphasizing the urgent need to promote a healthier lifestyle within society.
Global Smoking Trends and the Rise of E-Cigarettes
While global trends show a decline in smoking, the use of electronic cigarettes and vapes, often marketed as alternatives to regular cigarettes, is on the rise, particularly among younger age groups. Experts warn that the chemicals found in e-cigarettes, despite being perceived as less harmful, are at least as dangerous as those found in cigarette smoke. They advise quitting altogether rather than seeking alternative methods to stop smoking.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for urgent action to control the use of electronic cigarettes to minimize harm to public health, as approximately 2 billion people worldwide are addicted to cigarettes and other tobacco products.
As Türkiye grapples with the highest smoking rates globally and the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes, it is crucial for the government and public health organizations to take proactive measures to curb smoking and promote healthier lifestyles. The recent cigarette price hikes may serve as a deterrent for some, but a comprehensive approach addressing the root causes of smoking and providing support for those seeking to quit is essential to tackle this public health crisis effectively.
