UAE Approves Nicotine Pouches, Inspired by Sweden’s Success

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has given the green light to the sale of synthetic nicotine pouches, subject to sellers adhering to government-set safety standards. The decision was made with the hope that introducing smoke-free nicotine alternatives to the market would help individuals quit smoking. Smoking rates in the UAE and the Middle East remain relatively high, at 12% and 20%, respectively.

UAE officials drew inspiration from the success of nicotine pouches in Europe, particularly Sweden. By embracing alternative nicotine products and harm-reduction public health policies, Sweden has significantly reduced smoking rates and witnessed a considerable decrease in lung, lip, oral, esophageal, and stomach cancers since 1980.

Patrik Hildingsson, director of oral category communication at Philip Morris, producers of the popular Zyn nicotine pouch, emphasized the importance of providing alternatives to smokers who struggle to quit. “Cigarette smoking is harmful to health, there is no doubt about that. To reduce the harm, you need to quit, but many people just don’t, they stay with their cigarettes. For these people, we need to give them alternatives to get out of the combustions, the smoke process, and the chemicals that come with burning a crop,” he said.
