Vaping While Driving Could Lead to £1000 Fine in UK
As temperatures drop this winter, many drivers will keep their windows up and heating on. However, vapers may not realize that the vapor from their e-cigarettes could impair visibility, leading to a hefty fine.
Vaping While Driving Is Not Illegal, But Distractions Are
While vaping while driving is not illegal, Section 41D of the Road Traffic Act clearly states that anyone distracted while driving or unable to clearly see the road ahead could be committing an offence. This means that the same laws that could result in fines for drivers with windscreens obscured by snow during winter can also apply to those whose view is obstructed by vapor or who are distracted by their vape. Drivers found in violation of these laws could face a fine of up to £1000 and three penalty points.
Tips for Safe Driving During Winter for Vapers
Dan Marchant, director of Vape Club, urges motorists, especially current vapers and those transitioning from smoking, to take precautions. He suggests:
- Opting for a Mouth To Lung (MTL) vape kit that produces minimal vapor
- Ventilating the car by opening windows, even during colder months
- Keeping your vape within reach to avoid distractions
- Taking regular breaks on long journeys and using designated rest areas to vape
Sergeant Carl Knapp from the Sussex Road Policing Unit advises paying 100 percent attention to the roads when driving, as anything that takes that attention away has the potential for severe consequences.
