Washington State Rep. to Propose Flavored Tobacco Ban in Upcoming Legislative Session
Washington State Representative Kristine Reeves, D-Federal Way, announced on Wednesday her intention to introduce legislation that could lead to a complete ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products in the state. The campaign primarily focuses on banning menthol products, which Reeves claims have long targeted the Black community, including her mother, who passed away from lung cancer at the age of 60.
However, with the rise of flavored vaping products and other flavored tobacco products targeting young people, Reeves’ bill will seek to ban all flavored tobacco products. Despite pushback from those who believe a ban would lead to black-market sales, Reeves stands firm in her commitment to protect the communities and young people targeted by tobacco companies.
The bill has yet to be prefiled for the upcoming session of the Washington State Legislature, which is set to begin on January 13, 2025. Reeves’ announcement has sparked discussions about the potential impact of such a ban and the importance of addressing the targeting of vulnerable communities by the tobacco industry.
