Washington Legislators Plan Ban on Flavored Vape Juices 2025
Two Democratic legislators in Washington State, Rep. Kristine Reeves, D-Federal Way, and Sen. T’wina Nobles, D-University Place, have agreed to support a bill that would ban the sale of flavored vape products in the state. The legislation will likely be introduced in January 2025.
The coalition behind the bill, called “Flavors Hook Kids Washington,” seeks to ban all flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes. However, opponents argue that banning flavored vape varieties outright would violate adults’ free will and choices.
According to Statista, 70 percent of the U.S. vape market consists of adults aged 25-44, with the majority being men. Only 2 percent of adults over 45 regularly vape, while the 18-24 age group makes up 11 percent of the market.
Studies by the University of South Carolina and the National Institutes of Health indicate that vape companies usually target persons between the ages of 18 and 29, which is close to the teenage demographic.
In 2021, e-cigarette maker Juul paid $440 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by 33 State’s Attorney Generals, claiming they purposely targeted teens by failing to disclose the high nicotine content and its addictive nature.
