Wales Senedd Passes Vote to Ban Single-Use Disposable Vapes

Wales Senedd bans single-use vapes 2025
New Regulations to Prohibit Supply of Disposable Vapes from June 1, 2025

The Senedd, the Welsh Parliament, has passed a vote introducing new regulations to prohibit the supply, including for free, of single-use disposable vapes in Wales. The Environmental Protection (Single-use Vapes) (Wales) Regulations 2024 aims to tackle the litter and plastic pollution that harm the environment and wildlife.

Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs Huw Irranca-Davies hailed the vote as a major step forward in addressing throwaway culture and the environmental impacts of single-use vapes. He emphasized that removing single-use vapes from the supply chain will reduce waste, clean up streets, and protect nature and wildlife.

Regulations to Come into Force on June 1, 2025

The Welsh Government has worked closely with the UK Government and other Devolved Governments to ensure a coordinated approach to the ban, with all nations commencing the regulations at the same time. This collaboration aims to improve compliance and provide a consistent approach to enforcement across the UK.

From June 1, 2025, businesses will no longer be allowed to sell or give away single-use vapes for free. The Welsh Government urges businesses to start speaking to their suppliers about ordering alternatives and to educate staff and inform customers about the upcoming changes. Businesses will also need to organize the safe disposal of single-use vapes for their customers.

The ban on single-use vapes in Wales represents a significant step towards tackling the environmental impact of disposable vaping devices. By working together with the UK Government and other Devolved Governments, Wales aims to create a cleaner, more sustainable future for its citizens and the environment.
