UK Wolverhampton Extends “Swap to Stop” Vape Program
Over 135 Smokers Quit Through Free Vape Kit and Support Initiative
The City of Wolverhampton Council has extended its successful “Swap to Stop” smoking cessation program for another 12 months after helping over 135 local smokers quit in its first year. The initiative provides free vaping starter kits and dedicated behavioral support to residents looking to stop smoking.
Launched last year, the program is delivered over a 12-week period by trained staff who offer free vape kits alongside weekly check-in sessions at various community venues. This approach leverages the understanding that nicotine vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking and is one of the most effective tools for quitting. The council has made these kits and support services available at accessible locations, including the city’s eight Family Hubs and Central and Warstones libraries. This local program is part of a broader national initiative where the UK Government is offering one million free “Swap to Stop” vaping kits to help the country become “smokefree” by 2030.
Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, praised the program’s success. “Stopping smoking is the best thing you can do for your health and the health of those around you,” she stated, highlighting that smoking remains England’s single largest preventable cause of death, accounting for around 64,000 deaths annually. She also pointed to the significant financial benefits of quitting, noting that average smokers could save around £2,000 per year.
“It’s fantastic that over 135 residents have already been able to quit using the support available through Swap to Stop,” Councillor Ahmed added. Residents interested in the free program are invited to sign up via the council’s website.
