Nicotine Pouches Key to Sweden’s Smoke-Free Success for Women
New Research Highlights Pouches as Most Effective Quit Aid, Accelerating Decline in Female Smoking Rates
Groundbreaking new research indicates that oral nicotine pouches have been a pivotal innovation in accelerating Sweden’s progress towards becoming the world’s first officially “smoke-free” nation, and have played a particularly decisive role in helping women quit smoking more successfully than ever before. The comprehensive report, “Power in a Pouch,” unveiled on June 17, 2025, by international health experts, suggests these tobacco-free products have revolutionized smoking cessation for women.
Since their introduction in Sweden in 2016, smoke-free, tobacco-leaf-free nicotine pouches have, according to the analysis, helped supercharge the decline in smoking rates for both genders, contributing to an almost 200% rise in the quit rate among women. This has led to a 49% drop in smoking among Swedish women, a demographic that had previously lagged behind men in moving away from cigarettes.
The report identifies nicotine pouches as the preferred and most effective quit aid for all ex-smokers in Sweden, outperforming other methods. Women ranked pouches almost three times higher than vapes and 56% higher than nicotine gum as an effective cessation tool. Key reasons cited for their preference include the variety of available flavors (a top reason for 60% of female users), the complete absence of tobacco (cited by 46% of female users), and their socially considerate, clean, and stigma-free format.
Dr. Marewa Glover, a behavioral scientist from New Zealand and co-author of the report, stated, “The Swedish evidence is crystal clear: nicotine pouches are the most effective tool to help smokers – and especially women – to quit cigarettes. Analysis of health data, national surveys and women’s testimonials show nicotine pouches are the safest, most socially acceptable and environmentally friendly alternative to cigarettes that fits today’s lifestyles.”
Sweden’s pragmatic approach to harm reduction, embracing safer nicotine alternatives, contrasts sharply with many countries that lean towards prohibition. Its smoking rate is now 5.3%, just above the 5% international “smoke-free” threshold, and it boasts significantly lower rates of male lung cancer deaths (61% below EU average) and total cancer deaths (34% lower).
However, Dr. Delon Human, another co-author, leader of Smoke Free Sweden, and former Secretary-General of the World Medical Association, warned that excessive restrictions or bans on nicotine pouches elsewhere in Europe could sabotage these public health gains, particularly for women. “Misguided bans and barriers are blocking access to these life-saving products… They’re denying millions of smokers – particularly women – the quit aid that works best,” he said. The report found 34% of Swedish women would seek their preferred pouches elsewhere if they became unavailable due to legal restrictions.
The study also revealed strong public support for the role of pouches, with 73% of all respondents agreeing that women deserve access to the best quitting approaches reflecting their unique needs, and 69% (78% of women) believing nicotine pouches could be the “final missing piece of the puzzle” in eliminating smoking in Sweden, especially for women.
Dr. Glover concluded, “When women have access to clean, stigma-free alternatives, quit rates soar. Without them, we condemn another generation to smoking-related death. Policymakers must drop their prohibitionist mindset and follow Sweden’s evidence-based lead.”
