Austria Implements Smoking Ban in Cars with Minors
Austria has joined the growing list of European countries taking steps to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand smoke in vehicles. As of 2018, a new law has come into force that prohibits smoking in cars when passengers under the age of 18 are present.
Fines for Violators
Violators of the new smoking ban will face financial penalties. First-time offenders can expect fines of up to 100 euros. Repeat offenses will result in significantly higher fines, reaching up to 1,000 euros. These substantial penalties underscore the seriousness with which the Austrian government is approaching the issue of protecting minors from the harmful effects of passive smoking.
Exceptions for Taxis
The new law does include an exception for taxis. Taxi drivers will generally be allowed to continue smoking in their vehicles, even if minors are present. This decision has drawn some criticism from health advocates who argue that all children and young people should be protected from secondhand smoke, regardless of the type of vehicle they are in.
