Russia E-Cigarette Users Surge 19% to 5.3M in 2024
The total number of e-cigarette consumers in Russia increased by 19% in 2024, reaching 5.3 million people, according to data from the analytical service of the audit and consulting network FinExpertiza, prepared for TASS news agency. This growth in vape and heated tobacco product users has contributed to an overall rise in nicotine-dependent individuals in the country.
FinExpertiza’s analysis, based on Rosstat data, indicates a significant shift in nicotine consumption habits. While the use of traditional tobacco products is declining – with the number of “classic” smokers falling by 2% (half a million people) over the past two years – the popularity of electronic devices is steadily increasing. Over the same two-year period, the number of e-cigarette users grew by nearly a quarter, adding one million people.
Elena Trubnikova, President of FinExpertiza, noted, “If previously, at least since pre-COVID 2019, the share of the nicotine-dependent population consistently decreased due to its main part – tobacco consumers, then in 2024 the number of smokers of all types combined grew. This happened due to consumers of electronic smoking devices.” The combined share of nicotine-dependent citizens (including smokers, e-cigarette users, and users of non-smoking tobacco products) rose from 21.1% to 22.2% in 2024.
Regionally, the preference for e-cigarettes among all smokers is highest in Magadan Oblast and Chukotka (51%). Moscow follows with 38.2%, while regions like Chechnya, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, and Kalmykia report minimal or zero e-cigarette use among nicotine users.
