UK Charity Highlights Vaping Facts to Combat Misconceptions

Vaping Facts UK

Yorkshire Cancer Research is actively working to dispel growing public misconceptions about the safety of vaping compared to traditional smoking, particularly in light of ongoing public health discussions. The UK-based charity emphasizes that while not risk-free, vaping products present a significantly lower cancer risk and are an effective tool to help adult smokers quit combustible cigarettes.

Dr. Stuart Griffiths, Director of Research at Yorkshire Cancer Research, highlighted a concerning trend: “Data from Action on Smoking and Health shows that in 2024, a record 50% of adults believed vaping was more or equally as harmful as smoking, compared to 33% in 2022.” He stressed that this misunderstanding, which is not supported by scientific evidence, could deter smokers from using vapes as a potentially life-saving alternative. “Vaping products are an effective method of supporting people to stop smoking. More than 4,600 people quit smoking each year using vapes in Yorkshire alone,” Dr. Griffiths stated.

Research consistently shows that key chemicals linked to cancer are present at much lower levels in people who vape compared to those who smoke. Yorkshire Cancer Research has committed over £2.7 million to funding stop smoking services, which have helped 4,400 people quit. These programs are underpinned by evidence indicating that using nicotine-containing vaping products increases smoking quit rates more effectively than nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) alone. Following the success of a charity-funded trial offering free vape kits in Halifax, Yorkshire Smokefree Calderdale has now integrated vapes into its standard cessation service.

Dr. Griffiths reiterated, “Research shows that while vaping products are not risk free, they are significantly less harmful than smoking. This means they should only be used as a stop smoking product.” While supportive of measures to curb youth vaping, the charity insists that these products must remain accessible to adult smokers. “Yorkshire Cancer Research wants to highlight that vaping products are not lifestyle products, but are effective stop smoking aids… It is crucial that this opportunity to save lives is not lost.” The charity also advocates for policies like raising the minimum age for cigarette sales annually and a tax on the tobacco industry to fund cessation services.
