Michigan Recalls THC Vapes Over Potential Lung Harm Risk

Michigan THC vape recall MCT oil

The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) has announced a voluntary recall of multiple THC vape cartridges after discovering they contain Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) oil, a substance that can potentially cause lung damage when inhaled. The affected products include BLOOM Classic, BLOOM Live, and Platinum Vape brand cartridges sold in dispensaries across the state.

Wide Range of Flavors Impacted

The recall encompasses several popular BLOOM vape flavors purchased after September 1, 2022, including:

  • Alien Jack
  • Blue Dream
  • Cereal Milk
  • Champagne Kush
  • Durban Gelato
  • Face Off OG
  • Forbidden Fruit
  • Green Crack
  • Jack Herer
  • Maui Wowie
  • Pineapple Express
  • Pineapple Sherbert
  • Rainbow Runtz
  • Skywalker
  • White Widow

In January 2023, Platinum Vape brand cartridges were also voluntarily recalled by manufacturer RWB Michigan LLC and the CRA due to the presence of MCT oil. The affected Platinum Vape flavors, purchased after March 4, 2022, include Garlic Cookie, Blazing Blue Cheese, Banana Candy, and Grape Valley Kush.

MCT Oil Linked to Respiratory Issues

While MCT oil is commonly found in oral supplements and naturally occurs in foods like cheese and yogurt, it can cause respiratory issues when inhaled, according to a report from FOX 2 Detroit. The non-THC oil is not an approved additive for vape products under Michigan’s cannabis regulations.

Targeted Testing and Product Retrieval Efforts

The CRA began targeted testing for MCT oils in vapes last fall and has been working with dispensaries to identify, retrieve, and properly dispose of the affected products. Customers who have purchased the recalled vapes are advised to check the manufacturing dates and return them to the place of purchase or safely discard them.

Prioritizing Consumer Safety

The voluntary recalls demonstrate the CRA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of cannabis products sold in Michigan’s regulated market. By proactively testing for potentially harmful additives and collaborating with manufacturers and retailers to remove affected products from circulation, the agency aims to protect consumers and maintain public trust in the industry.

As the investigation continues, the CRA encourages consumers to report any adverse reactions to the recalled products and to remain vigilant about the ingredients in their cannabis vapes. The agency is expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
