Maldives to Introduce Generation Smoking Ban

Maldives generation smoking ban

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has announced plans to introduce a generation ban. The announcement came during the President’s podcast, “Rayyithunnaa Eku” [With Citizens], where he discussed existing measures and future plans to control tobacco use in the country.

The generation ban, which has been adopted in various countries, aims to ensure that young people never start using tobacco products. While further details are yet to be shared, the President emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting a healthier lifestyle for all citizens, including initiatives to make fruit and vegetables more affordable.

This announcement follows the enforcement of the Tobacco Control Act on December 15 last year, which banned the use of vapes in the Maldives. Since its implementation, fines related to vape use have exceeded MVR 160,500 (approximately $10,400 USD). Under the law, using vapes carries a fine of MVR 5,000, distributing them for free results in a fine of MVR 10,000, and selling vapes incurs a fine of MVR 20,000. Additionally, selling vapes to individuals under 21 years of age results in a hefty fine of MVR 50,000.
