The Melaka state health department is preparing a proposal to ban the manufacturing and sale of e-cigarettes (vapes) within the state. According to State Health, Human Resources, and Unity Committee Chairman Ngwe Hee Sem, the proposal will be presented to the state executive council for a final decision later this year.

Responding to a question in the Melaka assembly, Ngwe stated that the state government has not yet taken an official position on the ban as the matter is still under review. He emphasized that while vapes are often perceived as a safer alternative to smoking, their nicotine content poses significant addiction risks and health hazards.

Ngwe highlighted the dangers of vape liquids, noting they can contain harmful heavy metals like nickel, chromium, and arsenic, which are classified as Group 1 carcinogens. He also mentioned the presence of cobalt, which is toxic to the lungs, and cadmium, which can damage the kidneys and is linked to cancer. “These heavy metals have also been associated with mental health issues, including depression,” he added, underscoring the health rationale behind the proposed ban.
