Australian Senator Calls to Revise Dodgy Vape Restrictions

Australia Vaping Ban revise

Independent Tasmanian Senator Tammy Tyrrell has launched a campaign demanding a reversal of Australia’s strict vaping restrictions, labeling them “dodgy” and harmful. She states her partner Tim’s health has deteriorated, with a dry, hacking cough returning since he switched back to traditional cigarettes due to the difficulty in accessing vapes.

“This ban has pushed people back onto cigarettes,” Tyrrell asserted, highlighting that the bill was drafted hastily without proper consultation with pharmacies, many of whom are now reluctant to stock or sell vapes, often referring customers to nicotine patches instead. Tasmania’s rules are even stricter, requiring a doctor’s prescription to purchase vapes from a pharmacy.

Tyrrell argues that while cigarettes are readily available to adults, vapes, a potentially less harmful alternative, are effectively banned for practical access. She advocates for a regulated market similar to New Zealand’s model, proposing that vapes be sold wherever cigarettes are, with taxes directed to the health budget. “It means they’re not accessible to kids, but they are available for people who need one,” she explained. She is currently exploring fair taxation models, cautioning that current policies are fueling a black market. The federal Liberals previously proposed wider vape availability, a policy opposed by Labor and some public health experts who fear it would fuel youth addiction.
