Bahrain Parliament to Debate Ban on E-Cigarettes and Vapes
The Bahraini Parliament is set to discuss a draft law that would ban the sale and circulation of electronic shisha and e-cigarettes (vapes) throughout the Kingdom. MP Jalal Kazem Al-Mahfoudh announced that the proposal will be addressed in the upcoming parliamentary session, aiming to protect young people from the growing health risks associated with vaping.
Al-Mahfoudh highlighted the sharp increase in vape usage among children and teenagers, driven by appealing flavors and social media promotions that create a false impression of safety. He cited medical studies showing that the chemicals in e-shishas can harm the respiratory and immune systems of developing youths and that vaping is strongly linked to nicotine addiction, potentially leading to traditional tobacco use or substance abuse.
The proposal calls for tighter monitoring of sales and a ban on marketing e-cigarettes as safe alternatives, suggesting Bahrain could learn from successful bans in other Gulf countries and nations like Canada and Singapore. In addition to the legislative push, the MP urged health authorities and schools to enhance awareness campaigns about the dangers of vaping. If passed, the law would mark a significant turning point in Bahrain’s public health policy.
