Belgium Fines Over 1,200 for Smoking on Train Platforms
In the first six months of 2025, Belgian authorities issued 1,248 fines to individuals caught smoking on or near railway platforms. The figures, released by Federal Mobility Minister Jean-Luc Crucke, show an average of 208 fines per month this year.
This rate is slightly lower than in previous years. In 2023, a total of 2,747 fines were issued (an average of 228 per month), and in 2024, the total rose to 3,238 infractions (an average of 269 per month). The ban on both smoking and vaping on railway platforms in Belgium has been in effect since January 1, 2023, with violators facing a fine of €50.
This enforcement is part of Belgium’s broader anti-smoking efforts. The government also recently decided to extend its smoking and vaping ban to include on and near café and restaurant terraces, with that new restriction scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.
