Indonesia to Curb Tobacco & Vape Promotions, Especially Online

Indonesia Tobacco Control Nicotine Limit Vape Regulation

Health Ministry Highlights PP No. 28/2024 for Ad Bans Near Schools, on Social Media

The Indonesian Ministry of Health is emphasizing the critical role of Government Regulation (PP) No. 28 of 2024 in controlling tobacco and electronic cigarette products, particularly by restricting their promotion across various media, including social platforms and podcasts. Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, highlighted the new law’s importance.

Dr. Siti Nadia explained that PP 28/2024 mandates significant advertising restrictions: a 500-meter buffer zone for ads near educational institutions, a complete ban on social media advertising, and restricted television ad times (10 PM to 5 AM). This addresses concerns about product visibility in online content like podcasts, where smoking might appear as personal habit rather than direct advertisement, yet still falls under promotional restrictions.

The Ministry is also working to expand Smoke-Free Zones (KTR) to include broadcasting studios. Dr. Siti Nadia stressed the urgent need to protect youth from smoking and vaping, noting the aggressive promotion of flavored e-cigarettes which are increasingly popular among teenagers. The Ministry remains committed to strengthening regulations to safeguard public health.
