Malaysia Targets October for Tobacco and Vape Control Act Enforcement
Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad has set his sights on October as the target month for enforcing the highly anticipated Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852). The Act, which aims to curb the sale and purchase of tobacco products, smoking materials, and tobacco substitutes to minors, has been a topic of much discussion since its gazettement on February 2nd.
Final Phase of Implementation
In a recent statement to Berita Harian, Dzulkefly expressed his determination to implement four regulations and one order under the Act by October, pending no further delays. The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has already approved these regulations and orders, paving the way for the Act’s enforcement.
“We are in the final phase,” Dzulkefly stated, acknowledging the previous delay in implementation. “While we had hoped to start in September, if that isn’t feasible, October will be the target date.”
Protecting Minors from Tobacco and Vape Products
The Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 seeks to safeguard minors from the harmful effects of tobacco and vape products. Once enforced, the Act will prohibit the sale and purchase of these items to individuals under the age of 18. Additionally, it will ban the provision of any smoking-related services to minors.
Currently, nicotine vape products remain legal for minors until Act 852 comes into effect. The enforcement of this Act will mark a significant step in protecting the health and well-being of Malaysia’s youth.
As the nation eagerly awaits the implementation of Act 852, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad remains committed to his October target date. With the regulations and orders approved by the AGC, Malaysia is poised to take a decisive stance against the sale of tobacco and vape products to minors, ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.
