Oklahoma Pioneers Vapor Product Registry to Combat Illegal Vapes

Oklahoma has taken a significant step in the fight against the distribution of illegal vape products by becoming one of the first states to establish a vapor product registry. The registry requires manufacturers and retailers to report the vapor products they intend to sell within the state, aiming to assist local law enforcement in tackling the growing issue of illegal, disposable flavored vapes that target children.

State Representative Monroe Nichlos emphasized the bipartisan support for aggressive measures to protect kids from these products. An Associated Press report revealed that millions of illegal, disposable vapes are infiltrating the U.S. market, and the FDA struggles to keep up with the rapid distribution. Oklahoma’s ABLE commission currently lacks the necessary enforcement power, limiting their actions to arresting store clerks rather than dealing with the products themselves.

The majority of these illegal vapes are manufactured in China, allowing them to evade U.S. regulatory oversight. Oklahoma legislators, like Nichols, are determined to take enforcement into their own hands, with the vapor product registry serving as the first step in identifying illegal retailers and manufacturers. This pioneering approach sets an example for other states to follow in the battle against the illicit vape trade.
