Chief Minister Responds to Police Concerns Over Drug Abuse Links

The Penang state government is open to considering a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes and vape products, according to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. However, he clarified that no formal discussions or decisions have yet been made regarding such a prohibition.

Chow stated that the matter needs to be tabled by Daniel Gooi, the state committee chairman for youth, sports, and health, at a state executive council meeting before any deliberation occurs. “Only after that will we deliberate further and decide on the next course of action,” Chow said, as reported by Buletin Mutiara.

This potential consideration follows recent calls from Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay for more states to ban vape sales, citing increasing links to new synthetic drug abuse, particularly among youth. Police have reportedly found minors using drug-laced vapes.

Penang’s openness to discussion comes as Terengganu prepares to implement a vape sales ban on August 1, joining Johor which banned sales in 2016. Selangor is also actively reviewing a potential ban, indicating growing momentum among Malaysian states to restrict vape accessibility.
