Malaysian Kedah Considers Vape Sales Ban Following Terengganu
Kedah may soon join other Malaysian states in prohibiting the sale of electronic cigarettes (vapes). Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor expressed his intention to emulate Terengganu’s recent decision and plans to propose the ban at the next state executive council meeting.
Sanusi cited significant health concerns as the primary motivation, stating he was informed vaping is “hazardous, even more dangerous than cigarettes, due to chemical usage.” He also specifically mentioned worries about the abuse of illicit substances like ‘magic mushrooms’ through vaping devices, particularly among teenagers, which is emerging as a serious issue.
This move comes shortly after Terengganu announced a statewide ban on vape sales effective August 1, 2025, citing similar concerns about negative health effects on the younger generation. Terengganu plans strict enforcement under the Local Government Act 1976, including fines, seizures, and court action for non-compliance.
Kedah’s potential ban, alongside existing prohibitions in Johor and Kelantan, and considerations in Selangor and Penang, indicates a growing trend among Malaysian states to restrict or eliminate vape sales at the local level.
