Russia Bans Additives in Smokeless Tobacco Products
The Russian government has recently enacted a new decree limiting the use of additives in smokeless tobacco products as part of its efforts to promote a healthier lifestyle. This step forward in the fight against tobacco addiction and related diseases demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving public health and creating a safer environment for all citizens, especially minors.
Effective March 1, 2025, the decree will prohibit the use of several additives in chewing tobacco and snuff, including:
- Nicotine salts
- Ammonium
- Ammonia
- Acetaldehyde
- Sugars
These substances are often added to tobacco products to enhance flavor or accelerate nicotine absorption, but they significantly increase the risk of addiction and adverse health effects.
One of the main objectives of the ban is to reduce the likelihood of nicotine addiction, particularly among young people. The measure is expected to help decrease the number of minors using tobacco products. Additionally, with these restrictions in place, tobacco-related illnesses involving harmful additives are anticipated to decline, creating a safer environment for consumers.
In addition to the existing limits on additives, the State Council of the Udmurt Republic has proposed a bill to the State Duma concerning a ban on the retail sale of nicotine-containing products such as hookahs, e-cigarette liquids, and vapes in retail kiosks. These kiosks are located in high-traffic areas, attracting many people and setting a poor example for others while promoting smoking.
The introduction of these measures underscores the serious approach to addressing the spread of tobacco products and their harmful effects on health. The trend towards stricter regulation of this market is undoubtedly important and necessary.
