South Australian Government Plans Crackdown on Illegal Tobacco and Vape Sellers with Hefty Fines and Shutdowns

Vaping News
Illegal tobacco vape sellers shut fines million

The South Australian government has put tobacconists selling illegal tobacco and vapes on notice, as they work on new legislation to shut down these businesses and impose penalties of up to $1.1 million. Consumer and Business Affairs Minister Andrea Michaels is set to receive the power to close premises suspected of selling illegal products for up to six months, with the approval of a magistrate.

Hefty Fines and Penalties for Violators

Under the proposed legislation, businesses violating the shutdown order could face a penalty of up to $1.1 million, while individuals could be fined as much as $700,000. The initial order by the minister could apply for 72 hours and be extended for up to six months with a magistrate’s approval.

Government Taskforce Seizes Over $1 Million in Illicit Products

Ms Michaels revealed that a government taskforce has already seized more than $1 million worth of illicit tobacco and vapes, but she stressed that more needs to be done. “This is a fantastic start, but what we are seeing is that some of these businesses that we raid are up and running again almost immediately, and that’s unacceptable,” she said.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing criminals from profiting off targeting unsuspecting people and destroying the health of children, using the proceeds to fund other illegal activities.

High Cigarette Prices Fuel Black Market

Australia ranks as one of the most expensive countries in the world to buy cigarettes, with the cost of an average packet of 25 reaching up to $50, half of which is tax. This high cost has spawned a growing illicit market, with some stores selling untaxed and illegal packets for almost half the price of the legal product.

The lucrative black market across the country has led to turf wars between criminal organizations, particularly in Victoria, where there have been more than 70 firebombing attacks on tobacco shops.
