Australia Tasmania Mandates Prescription for Vapes Starting April 1, 2025
Tasmania has reinforced its vaping laws, making it mandatory for adults to obtain a doctor’s prescription to purchase e-cigarettes, e-liquid, and vaping devices starting April 1, 2025. This approach differs from other Australian states where certain e-cigarette products can be bought over the counter in pharmacies without a prescription.
The Public Health Amendment (Vaping) Bill 2024, which recently passed its final legislative hurdle in the Tasmanian Parliament, has been described by the government as a “nation-leading” approach to vaping regulation. Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing Roger Jaensch emphasized that the legislation aims to reduce youth vaping and protect the community from the harms associated with these products.
Despite the changes in national laws last October, which allowed adults in some states to purchase certain e-cigarette products over the counter in pharmacies without a prescription, Tasmania has opted to retain its requirement for a doctor’s prescription to access e-cigarettes, e-liquid, and vaping devices. The sale of vaping products to individuals under 18 remains illegal in the state.
Jaensch reiterated the government’s commitment to taking “all actions possible” to minimize the harms caused by vaping, particularly among the youth population.
