Wisconsin Bill to Raise Nicotine Age to 21 Reintroduced
Wisconsin legislators are once again pushing a bill to raise the state’s legal age for purchasing tobacco and nicotine products to 21, aiming to align state law with federal regulations enacted in 2019. Currently, Wisconsin state statutes still list the purchasing age as 18, creating confusion for retailers and law enforcement.
Supporters, including Rep. Karen Hurd (R-Withee), argue that aligning the laws will empower local authorities to better enforce age restrictions and prevent products from reaching younger teens through 18-year-old peers. Retailers like Seth Blackstone of Puffin Pass in Madison note they already adhere to the federal 21+ standard to avoid complications.
Despite previous attempts in 2020 and 2022 passing the Assembly, similar bills have stalled in the state Senate. The American Heart Association expressed frustration over the delay. The current bill’s fate remains uncertain, with Senate leadership yet to confirm their support.
