“TPD Compliant” refers to a product, usually related to e-cigarettes or vaping products, that is compliant with the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). The TPD is a directive of the European Union which places limits on the sale and merchandising of tobacco and tobacco related products across the EU.

So what exactly is TPD?

From November 2016 E-cigarettes need to follow the TPD law and regulations.

The Tobacco Products Directive 2014/14/EU (TPD) introduced new rules for nicotine-containing e-cigarettes and refill containers (Article 20) which ensure minimum standards for the safety and quality of all vape products. Anyone who manufactures or imports these products or who re-brands any product as their own must submit information about their products through the European Common Entry Gate (EU-CEG) notification portal.
The TPD does not cover nicotine-containing products that are authorised as medicines.

The directive introduced new rules for e-cigarettes and refill containers, aiming to ensure a high level of health protection for EU citizens. These include, among other things:

  • Limiting the size of e-liquid containers and the nicotine strength.
  • Mandatory health warnings on packaging.
  • Requirements for manufacturers to submit detailed product information to the authorities.

If a product is “TPD Compliant”, it meets these regulations. It’s important to note that these regulations can vary somewhat between EU countries, as each member state has some discretion over how they implement the directive. The directive was initially implemented in May 2016.
