Michigan Recalls Thousands Cannabis Vapes with Banned MCT Oil
Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) has issued recalls for thousands of cannabis vape cartridges found to contain medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, a diluting agent banned for use in vapes in the state since October 2024 due to potential respiratory health risks.
The recalls include 5,765 Kushy Punch brand vape carts manufactured by Ann Arbor-based Exclusive Brands, which were sold between January and May. This follows an earlier recall of over 26,000 Motor City Cannacarts and RIPZ-branded vapes. Another recall was issued for Top Smoke Go Kartz Runtz cartridges produced by IVP Holding, which were sold at 75 dispensaries across Michigan.
The situation has sparked controversy. Narmin Jarrous, chief development officer for Exclusive Brands, stated that every batch of their Kushy Punch vapes was tested and passed all state-mandated compliance standards before being sold. “It is our view that no rules or regulations were broken,” Jarrous said, suggesting the CRA’s recall is due to a “shifting approach” rather than a violation of existing protocols. The company maintains the products were “fully compliant.”
It remains unclear how the MCT oil, a fat derived from sources like coconut oil, was introduced into the products and bypassed mandatory safety testing. Jarrous suggested the CRA has previously hypothesized that MCT oil could be unintentionally added via terpenes. However, if the contamination originated from tainted terpenes, it should have been detected during final product testing. The CRA has declined to comment on the open investigation or what prompted its review of products that had already been cleared for sale.
