Czech Republic Tightens E-Cigarette Sales & Labeling Rules
The Czech Republic is set to tighten rules for the sale and labeling of electronic cigarettes through a new decree amendment effective this December. Manufacturers will have a seven-month grace period to sell off existing stock before the new regulations are fully enforced. The move aims to make e-cigarettes less attractive to young people and increase consumer transparency.
Under the new rules, e-cigarettes with candy-like flavors will be prohibited. E-liquids will also be banned from containing mineral or vegetable oils, fats, cannabinoids and their derivatives. Furthermore, all vaping products, including nicotine-free ones, must carry health warnings and a symbol indicating they are unsuitable for individuals under 18. Currently, only nicotine-containing products are legally banned for sale to minors.
The decree also addresses labeling inconsistencies. Nicotine content must now be uniformly stated in milligrams per milliliter (mg/ml) or micrograms per dose, making it easier for consumers to compare products. All mandatory information must be printed directly on the product, not on a sticker covering the original label, and must include a national registration ID number.
This regulatory push follows a significant rise in vaping, with a 2023 State Institute of Health (SZÚ) survey showing nearly 14% of the population used e-cigarettes, almost triple the rate from five years prior. Over a quarter of young people aged 15-24 vape regularly. Health officials have warned about nicotine’s negative impact on adolescent brain development and the high potential for addiction.
