Dothan, Alabama to Implement New Vape Tax in December
The City of Dothan, Alabama, is set to introduce a new tax on vaping products, scheduled to take effect this December. Following recent authorization from the Alabama Legislature, the city will levy a tax of 10 cents per milliliter on vape fluid. The new ordinance will be formally enacted later this month, with the tax implementation beginning 60 days after that date. In addition to the tax, the city has also established a new business license requirement for all vendors selling vape products.
City Manager Randy Morris explained the city’s proactive stance, stating, “We wanted to take the opportunity to get this revenue stream while we had the chance.” He compared the new vape tax to existing tobacco taxes, noting its potential to fund essential city operations and services.
The measure was not without opposition. District 3 Commissioner Bradley Bedwell was the lone dissenting vote, expressing concern about raising taxes without a prior review of the city’s budget. “Instead of increasing taxes on the residents, we ought to just look at budgeting our expenses, not try to drive our revenue up,” Bedwell said.
For context, vape cartridges typically contain 0.5 to 1.0 milliliters of e-liquid, while standard refill bottles often hold 10 milliliters, meaning the new tax will have a varied impact depending on the product type.
