FDA Approves First Fruit-Flavored Vapes for Adults Under Trump
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially authorized the first fruit-flavored e-cigarettes for adult smokers. This major policy shift under the Trump administration follows intense industry lobbying and aims to offer adult smokers alternatives, despite anticipated backlash from health organizations.
Vaping advocates have long argued that flavored e-cigarettes are crucial for transitioning adults away from combustible cigarettes, which are blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually. However, previous FDA authorizations were strictly limited to tobacco and menthol flavors from major manufacturers like Juul and Altria due to concerns over youth appeal.
The newly authorized products are manufactured by Glas Inc. To directly address concerns about underage access, the FDA highlighted the company’s mandatory digital age-verification system, which operates in two steps:
- Users must first verify their age by uploading a government ID to their cellphone.
- The e-cigarette remains locked and can only be used when actively connected via Bluetooth to the verified user’s phone.
According to the FDA release, Glas Inc. will market these specific authorized flavors under the following names:
| Authorized Flavor Profile | Glas Inc. Marketing Name |
|---|---|
| Mango | Gold |
| Blueberry | Sapphire |
| Menthol | Classic Menthol |
| Menthol | Fresh Menthol |
The FDA emphasized that this authorization is not an endorsement, reiterating that the devices are strictly intended for adults attempting to quit or cut back on smoking. Kathy Crosby of the anti-tobacco nonprofit Truth Initiative called the decision a “key test case,” stressing the need for vigilant monitoring to protect young people.
This authorization represents a stark contrast to the Biden administration, which denied over a million marketing applications for fruit and candy flavors. While Trump introduced the first flavor restrictions during his initial term, he campaigned recently on a promise to “save” vaping, capitalizing on teen vaping rates dropping to a 10-year low.
Despite this new legal pathway for Glas Inc., government data shows the vast majority of vaping teens currently use unauthorized, disposable fruit and candy-flavored devices typically imported from China.
