French Parliament Moves Towards Banning Disposable Vapes
On February 4th, French deputies unanimously voted in favor of a bill aimed at banning disposable e-cigarettes, commonly known as “puffs.” The legislation, sponsored by several elected officials including Francesca Paquini and Michel Lauzzana, seeks to combat the proliferation of these single-use devices.
The European Commission deemed the bill “justified, necessary, and proportionate to the objective of protecting public health” in September of last year. Having passed the National Assembly, the bill must now be voted on one final time in the Senate before it can come into force.
A Lengthy Legislative Process
The bill to ban disposable e-cigarettes was first introduced in the National Assembly in November 2022. It was subsequently voted on in December 2023 before being examined by the Senate and finalized in a joint committee.
Throughout the legislative process, elected officials affirmed their determination to continue working on this issue and to alert consumers to the dangers posed by these products. They view the ban as an important step in the broader fight against smoking and its harmful effects on health, while also addressing the environmental concerns related to the proliferation of single-use vaping devices.
