Jersey Confirms Disposable Vape Ban from August 1st

Jersey Vape Ban

The government of Jersey has confirmed it will ban single-use vapes to protect the environment and curb use among children. Minister for Infrastructure Andy Jehan has signed a commencement order making it illegal to import or supply disposable vapes starting from August 1st.

Retailers will have a grace period until February 1st of the following year to sell through any existing stock. After the import and supply ban takes effect, anyone caught illegally importing single-use vapes will have the items seized and could face a fine of up to £1,000. The government clarified that individuals who purchased disposable vapes before the ban will still be allowed to use them personally.

A vape is considered single-use if it cannot be refilled, its battery cannot be recharged, or its coil cannot be replaced. A government spokesperson stated the ban addresses the significant waste and environmental damage caused by these devices, which are often discarded after a few days. They also highlighted the fire hazard posed by their batteries and the difficulty in recycling them. “The ban will also help to reduce the uptake of vaping by children and young people, as single-use vapes are their product of choice,” the spokesperson added. This move follows a similar ban on disposable vape sales implemented in the UK on June 1st.
