Malaysia’s Health Ministry Considering Total Ban on Vapes
The Malaysian Ministry of Health is considering a total ban on the sale and use of vapes and electronic cigarettes, according to Health Minister Dzukelfy Ahmad. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, he stated that any such move would require careful planning, coordination with key agencies, and a thorough study of its potential impacts.
A special committee on e-cigarettes, chaired by senior health officials, met on July 22 to discuss stronger regulatory measures, including the possibility of a full prohibition. Dzukefly said the committee recommended further studies to assess the legal, industrial, government revenue, and licensing aspects before proceeding with a ban. The ministry will now consult with the Attorney-General’s Chambers and other ministries to refine the proposed approach.
At a later press conference, Dzukefly clarified that the ministry would only proceed with a ban if it is recommended by the committee based on evidence. For now, he said, the ministry’s priority is the strict implementation and enforcement of the existing Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024.
