Nevada Vape Directory Bill (SB 435) Faces Opposition
A bipartisan bill in Nevada, Senate Bill 435, which proposes the creation of a state-managed vape product directory, is facing opposition from an unlikely coalition of vape store owners and anti-smoking health organizations. The bill, sponsored by Democratic Senator Nicole Cannizzaro, would require the Department of Taxation to create a public directory listing all vapor products legally available for sale in the state, mirroring the current system for cigarettes.
Senator Cannizzaro stated the measure aims to crack down on “bad actors” illegally selling certain vape products by establishing a clear framework for legal sales. However, groups including the American Heart Association and the Nevada Tobacco and Smoke-free Coalition oppose the bill as written. They argue that such registry laws are not a proven, cost-effective solution and divert resources from more effective policies like strong tobacco retail licensing programs that fund enforcement and prevent underage sales.
Kendra Edwards, a lobbyist for the American Heart Association, said, “Although we support efforts to prevent youth access… registry bills like SB435 are not the solution.” Megan Boelter of the Nevada Tobacco Control and Smokefree Coalition added that the misconception that these registries efficiently remove illicit products from the market is not supported by evidence from other states. The bill has advanced out of committee but awaits a full Senate vote.
