Nicotine Pouches Rise in Canada: A Smoke-Free Shift
A quiet revolution is reshaping nicotine consumption in Canada, with nicotine pouches increasingly becoming the product of choice for adults seeking alternatives to cigarettes and vaping. These small, tobacco-free sachets, placed discreetly between the lip and gum, are gaining popularity for their convenience, lack of smoke or vapor, and ability to be used unobtrusively in public spaces.
Originally a Scandinavian trend, nicotine pouches have surged in the North American market. Unlike traditional snus, they contain no tobacco leaf, instead using plant fibers infused with nicotine, flavorings, and sweeteners. This composition allows users to avoid many carcinogenic substances found in combustible cigarettes. With Canadian cigarette use dropping to a historic low of under 11% in 2024, alternative delivery methods are filling the gap. Online retailers like Snusio have become key sources for these regulated products.
The primary appeal for many is discretion. “People are looking for a way to satisfy nicotine cravings without the stigma or restrictions of smoking,” explains Dr. Marlene Ford, a Toronto-based addiction specialist. The absence of odor and smoke makes them permissible in many indoor environments where smoking and vaping are banned, attracting professionals and students alike.
However, the regulatory landscape remains complex. Health Canada currently classifies nicotine pouches as nicotine-containing consumer products, distinct from the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act. This “grey zone” prohibits health claims and marketing to minors but has led industry advocates to call for clearer national standards to ensure product quality and prevent youth access. While scientific consensus suggests pouches pose substantially less risk than smoking due to the lack of combustion, experts emphasize that they are not harmless. Nicotine remains an addictive stimulant with potential cardiovascular and neurological effects.
As innovation accelerates, with manufacturers developing new formats and biodegradable materials, nicotine pouches are carving out a stable niche. Experts believe they are here to stay, offering a potential harm reduction tool if regulated properly, though education remains critical to prevent uptake among non-smokers and youth.
