Oregon Classifies Nicotine Pouches as Tobacco Products
The Oregon Health Authority has expanded the state’s legal definition of tobacco products, effective Friday. This regulatory shift, driven by rising youth nicotine addiction, places popular oral nicotine pouches, gums, and lozenges under the same strict sales restrictions as cigarettes and vapes.
Under the updated law, consumers must be at least 21 years old to purchase these alternative nicotine products. State health officials hope the move will restrict youth access to these items, which have surged in popularity due to appealing sweet and minty flavors. Nationally, nicotine pouches became the second most-used tobacco product among middle and high school students last year.
