UK Release First Dosing Guide for Medical Cannabis Oils
The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS) has launched a landmark publication, establishing the first standardized dosing protocols for medical cannabis oils in the United Kingdom. Titled Medical Cannabis Oils: Dosing and Guidance for Safe and Effective Treatment in Adults and Children, the guide was officially unveiled at the Cannabis Health Symposium in London on November 25th. This release represents a significant advancement in ensuring safe, consistent prescribing practices across the nation.
The handbook aims to fill critical gaps in clinician education, providing practical, evidence-based strategies for initiating, titrating, and monitoring cannabis oil treatments. It specifically covers 12 commonly treated conditions, including chronic pain, epilepsy, anxiety, autism, headache, and sleep disorders. Beyond dosing tables, the guide outlines protocols for managing adverse effects, assessing potential drug-drug interactions, and implementing harm-reduction measures.
Edited by pediatric neurologist Dr. Evan Cole Lewis and Dr. Rowan Thompson, Vice Chair of the MCCS, the guide draws upon extensive clinical expertise and peer-reviewed research. Dr. Lewis emphasized that the resource responds to a “clear and pressing need” in a rapidly evolving field. “Our foremost responsibility is to ensure safety while providing effective care,” he stated. “The dosing strategies presented here are grounded in published evidence and shaped by the cumulative expertise of experienced clinicians who have treated thousands of patients.”
Dr. Thompson highlighted the lack of formal training in cannabinoid medicine for many resident doctors, noting that the guide lays the foundation for building prescribing confidence. “Prescribing can go beyond simply choosing which oil to prescribe – building confidence in titration allows clinicians to optimise the potential of medical cannabis oils,” he explained.
Professor Mike Barnes, Chair of the MCCS, hailed the publication as a vital tool for improving patient outcomes and supporting new prescribers. The handbook is designed to complement existing MCCS resources and training programs. A second handbook focusing on medical cannabis flower, minor cannabinoids, and terpenes is expected to follow in the coming months. The current guide is now available as a digital PDF and eBook.
