Monaco Bans Disposable Vapes, Raises Smoking Age in New Law
Monaco has implemented a significant anti-tobacco reform, unanimously approved by its National Council on May 15th. The new law notably bans single-use electronic cigarettes, commonly known as “puffs,” raises the legal smoking age to 18, and expands no-smoking zones throughout the Principality.
This comprehensive update, described as a “major milestone” by Government Councillor Christophe Robino, aims to address public health concerns, combat the environmental damage from disposable vapes, and particularly protect young people from nicotine addiction. The ban on disposable vapes targets their appeal to minors and the plastic and battery waste they generate.
The legislation now formally incorporates electronic and associated nicotine delivery systems, modernizing Monaco’s approach to the evolving tobacco market. By raising the purchasing age for tobacco to 18 and increasing smoke-free areas, Monaco seeks to reduce passive smoking exposure. This decisive action positions the Principality at the forefront of European anti-tobacco efforts, reflecting a strong political consensus on safeguarding public and environmental well-being.
