Malaysia Selangor Mandates Seizure of All Vape Ads

Selangor Vape Ban Malaysia

Authorities in Selangor have been directed to immediately seize and confiscate all advertisements for electronic cigarette products across the state. The instruction follows a coordination meeting on May 16, led by State Public Health and Environment Committee Chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, which discussed a potential ban on e-cigarette sales in Selangor.

Jamaliah stated on Tuesday (May 20) that this decisive action aligns with the Control of Tobacco Product for Public Health Act 2023 (Act 852). This legislation explicitly prohibits any advertising, promotion, and sponsorship related to electronic smoking products.

The meeting also addressed broader issues surrounding e-cigarette use and sales, including enforcement difficulties, licensing, legal frameworks, and monitoring. “The issue of online sales was also discussed, as it is difficult to control and is often the main channel for teenagers to obtain these products,” Jamaliah highlighted. She pointed to the alarming National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2022, which found nearly 14.9% of Malaysian male teenagers (13-17) use e-cigarettes, necessitating urgent state-level action.

A follow-up meeting by the Public Health Standing Committee is planned to explore policy options before a final proposal is submitted to the state executive council. Jamaliah emphasized the state’s commitment to public health and future generations, welcoming collaboration from parents, educational institutions, and civil society to ensure the measures are effective and sustainable.
