Aragon Youth Smoking Rates Double Spain’s National Average
The University of Zaragoza and local health experts have sounded the alarm over a youth smoking epidemic in Aragon, where daily cigarette use among teens aged 14 to 18 has reached 7.5%. This rate significantly outpaces the national Spanish average of 4.3%.
While daily smoking is higher in Aragon, monthly vaping rates among its youth stand at 16%, which is ten percentage points lower than the national average of 26%. Despite being lower than the national figure, health professionals warn that both habits represent a growing public health crisis.
| Consumption Metric (Ages 14-18) | Aragon | Spain (National) |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Cigarette Smoking | 7.5% | 4.3% |
| Monthly Vaping Prevalence | 16.0% | 26.0% |
Isabel Nerín, president of the Aragonese Tobacco-Free Society, warned that the low risk perception of e-cigarettes, combined with easy online accessibility, drives youth addiction. “Most of these liquids contain nicotine, which is highly addictive,” Nerín explained, noting that international data shows vaping serves as a gateway to conventional tobacco.
Experts are calling for stricter regulations and targeted prevention campaigns. The urgency is underscored by the toll of secondhand smoke, which claims 182 lives annually in Aragon alone.
