Brazil Orders Online Platforms to Remove All Vape Content
The Brazilian federal government has issued a notice to major digital platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and e-commerce site Mercado Livre, demanding the removal of all content and offers related to electronic cigarettes (vapes) within 48 hours. The commercialization of these products is prohibited in Brazil.
The directive was issued on Tuesday (19th) by the National Council for Combating Piracy and Intellectual Property Crimes (CNCP), which is linked to the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon). In addition to removing the content, the notified companies must submit a report within ten business days detailing the actions taken, including content removals, account blockages, and new control measures implemented. Failure to comply may result in administrative measures and referrals to competent authorities.
In April of this year, the gov has already asked those platforms to remove all vape related content .
“We are acting continuously and firmly to curb the commercialization and dissemination of prohibited products in Brazil,” stated Senacon Secretary Wadih Damous. The CNCP has also requested formal clarification from YouTube regarding claims that promotional or instructional vape videos could remain accessible if classified for users over 18, reinforcing that Brazilian law does not authorize advertising for any prohibited product.
