Bulgaria Approves 2nd Reading of Bill to Ban Vapes
The Bulgarian Parliamentary Committee on Economic Policy and Innovation has approved at its second reading a bill to amend the Act on Tobacco and Related Products, which includes a complete ban on the sale, use, and advertising of vapes for minors. The bill also proposes similar restrictions on energy drinks consumed by children.
Tabled in February by Healthcare Committee Chair Kostadin Angelov, the legislation aims to protect young people. Committee Chair Petar Kanev noted that after nearly two months of working groups, a consensus was reached with employer organizations and ministries. Parliament had previously voted 197-0 in favor of banning the marketing and sale of disposable and reusable electronic cigarettes (vapes) and similar devices at the bill’s first reading in February.
While the committee has advanced the bill for a second plenary vote, its entry into force is contingent upon notification by the European Commission, as certain provisions require this step.
