Maldives Issues MVR 127,000 in Vape-Related Fines in July
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has collected MVR 127,000 (approximately USD 8,200) in fines for various vape-related offenses during the month of July, following the implementation of a comprehensive ban. The law, which took effect on December 15, 2024, prohibits the use, import, sale, and trade of all vaping products in the country.
According to statistics released by the MPS, 22 individuals were fined in July. The breakdown of the penalties is as follows:
- MVR 62,000Â for the use of vapes.
- MVR 58,000Â for the possession of vapes.
- MVR 7,000Â for the sale or purchase of vapes.
Under the amended Tobacco Control Act, hefty fines are imposed for violations. Importing vaping devices can result in a fine of MVR 50,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 fine for each imported electronic cigarette or device. The law also prohibits the free distribution of these products. This strict enforcement is part of the government’s broader measures to control tobacco, which also includes setting the minimum age for purchasing and selling tobacco products at 21 years.
