Busan, South Korea Bans Synthetic Nicotine Vapes in No-Smoking Zones
The Busan Metropolitan Government has officially launched a strict enforcement campaign targeting the use of synthetic nicotine e-cigarettes in designated no-smoking areas. This regulatory shift follows the expiration of a two-month grace period on June 24, marking a significant expansion of South Korea’s tobacco control measures.
Previously, synthetic nicotine products escaped regulation because the legal definition of tobacco only covered products derived from tobacco leaves. Under the newly revised Tobacco Business Act, all nicotine-containing products are classified as tobacco. Consequently, individuals caught vaping synthetic nicotine in smoke-free zones now face fines of up to 100,000 won under the National Health Promotion Act.
In addition to patrolling public spaces, health officials from Busan’s district offices are inspecting retail compliance. This includes monitoring tobacco vending machines and cracking down on retail advertisements that illegally promote flavored tobacco products.
