Florida: Coral Springs Eyes Extension of Vape Shop Moratorium
Coral Springs city leaders are set to vote on extending a moratorium on new smoke and vape shops for another six months. The City Commission will address the issue this Wednesday, allowing more time to study zoning regulations amid concerns over the rapid proliferation of these businesses.
Since the first shop opened in 2013, the number of smoke and vape retailers in Coral Springs has grown to 23, with nearly half opening since 2022 alone. This surge prompted Commissioner Joshua Simmons to call for a review of best practices for regulation earlier this year. Officials are exploring zoning changes to limit shops dedicating more than 20% of floor space to tobacco, nicotine, or CBD products.
Proposed regulations may include stricter parking requirements and mandatory distance buffers from other smoke shops, schools, parks, and places of worship. The extension is requested as city staff finalize these new rules to better manage the industry’s local footprint.
