Germany Mandates Free In-Store Vape Take-Back Scheme
German municipal waste management authorities have confirmed that all vape retailers must now accept used e-cigarettes and tobacco heaters back from consumers free of charge. This policy addresses the severe fire risks associated with improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries.
When thrown into household trash, residual charges in vape batteries often short-circuit under pressure during waste collection. This triggers explosive fires in garbage trucks and sorting plants. Nationally, waste disposal associations report approximately 30 such fires daily.
Because e-cigarettes are classified as electrical waste, they are legally barred from household trash. Consumers must return them to retail outlets or municipal recycling centers (WEZ). To assist small businesses, municipal centers accept these collected devices from retailers at no cost. Where possible, users should remove and recycle batteries separately to minimize fire risks and recover valuable raw materials.
